The club was founded in the summer of 2001 by a small group of former rowers and outdoor enthusiasts. Dion Sweat led the effort to form the club and served as its first president. The club started with only one 4-man rowing shell and no dock or shelter. Our membership has grown to over 50 members, with active master's, collegiate and junior women's programs rowing year-round.
A major step in our development was the construction of our boathouse in 2005 on Lake Julian in southern Buncombe county. Construction was made possible by a broad range of support from individuals, organizations and businesses in the community.
Today, the club is rapidly growing and serves a diverse membership of people ranging in ages from 14 to over 70. The club is an organizational member of USRowing, the national governing body of rowing in the United States.
